Feria Albrecht:

Feria, both in concept and now, is an intentional blank slate—which I thought was going to be a particular “protagonist challenge” to pose to myself as a writer and has, both in concept and now, driven me completely insane at times.

When we meet Feria, she’s on the run from a man named Elizar, who leads a band of thieves. Elizar & co. have kept Feria in cruel servitude for a number of years, and she has no memory of life before their camp. Ultimately, she decides it’s time to take fate into her own hands and risk death by escaping. What happens next—and what she discovers about herself as a result—is certainly something you’ll have to buy the book to find out. Ha!

To me, Feria—and her seemingly empty past—represent the limitless possibilities in a world like Ariavide. She is resilient to a fault, willing to use her grief as a tool to sharpen both her empathy and her determination, and she’s not afraid to find new possibilities by prodding old wounds. I’ve particularly enjoyed writing her arc, and I hope you love her as much as I do.

Zexes de Noxvide:

I honestly don’t know how to talk about Zexes while also avoiding spoilers. I will say the following…

Zexes my favorite character (that I’ve created), ever, full stop.  In the initial concept work I did for AEO, even up through the first outline, he was the villain of the book. In true Big Bad fashion, he felt very one-note to me. There was something fundamentally wrong with how I was positing him, and I couldn’t figure it out, plot-wise. Then I decided that instead of one protagonist, I’d have two. The rest of the book wrote itself after that (at least in the outline I’m using now).

We meet Zexes as he does his level best to stop a horrific outcome from coming to fruition. Eons ago, it was foretold that the actions of a woman with golden wings would lead to the death of his people. His only hope in avoiding the inevitable is to take part in the Prophecy of the Hunt—i.e., find said woman and stop her actions—permanently. What happens next… well, you’ve heard this part before, I think. 🙂
